The Eastern Villages

Skåne has always had Sweden’s best agricultural land (which is one reason the Swedes and the Danes fought so long and hard over who got to keep it).

Lund kommun reaches a fair way east of the university city itself, and also sprawls southward—as if swerving to avoid Staffanstorp, some might say—to enclose Genarp and the magical Hackeberga nature reserve. Skåne has always had Sweden’s best agricultural land (which is one reason the Swedes and the Danes fought so long and hard over who got to keep it) but these lush plains are the among the cream of the crop, and full of beautiful places to go.

If you’re looking for bases from which to explore for a day or two, then Dalby and Södra Sandby are a good bet, while Torna Hällestad is a big hit with enthusiasts of community self-organisation, in addition to drawing hungry passers-by to the dining room attached to its famous lanthandel.

The further east you go, the more there is to see… but by that point you’ll find yourself in the Vombsjösänken biosphere zone, which merits its very own section of the guide.
