That the northeastern part of Skåne should be nicknamed “the Lakelands” is no mystery: while there are certainly places elsewhere in Sweden with a greater density of inland bodies of water, this is nonetheless where the majority of Skåne’s can be found.
The region revolves around the characterful (and flood-prone) city of Kristianstad, at least in terms of its human-driven activities, with agriculture and food production as the dominant economic sector. A more ecological perspective would probably emphasise instead the centrality of Helge Å, Skåne’s longest river, which is peppered with hydroelectric installations but nonetheless navigable (to certain sorts of water craft) from almost as far north as Osby, down through Kristianstad and Hammarsjön, and on to Åhus and the fabled “eel coast”.
The population up here is quite sparse in places, which means that the transport network sometimes takes a more “by request” approach—see our comprehensive guide to getting around to find out how to get where you want to go!
