Solar camping puts open fields in the shade

It’s broadly agreed that camping in the rain is not much fun, but camping during long, hot and dry spells—such as are becoming ever more common during summer in Skåne—is a little more divisive: some relish the relentless heat, while others dislike their tent turning into an unplanned sauna as soon as the sun come up. If you’re in the latter category, then Solar Camping may be the compromise you’ve been looking for; check their website for their ever-expanding list of locations.

As solar cells became a more frequent sight in the Skånian landscape, some entrepreneurs sought to diversify the land use of the vast solar fields that popped up on non-arable land. As it turns out, panels angled 45 degrees to catch the sun also provide ample shade for the ground below—perfect for the weary camper out on a long trek along Skåne’s many leden (walking trails). Options range from the luxurious Solar Bed for those who can’t be bothered to carry a sleeping bag, to the simplest Just The Roof option for the budget conscious; all options come with a low-voltage socket that will charge your portable devices for you while you’re prepping your muesli in the morning.

Do note, however, that many Solar Camping sites also give space to commercial crops, and to other shade-loving plants that struggle to grow in more open settings—so make sure you only pitch in the designated slots, unless you want to end up with a fine for crushing some obscure orchid! Note also that various free-roaming critters are just as keen on shady shelter as humans, so you never know what you might wake up next to… though we’re fairly confident that you’re unlikely to find you’ve been bunking with a wolf.
